Will It Fit in My Mitten?

Did all those animals actually fit inside Nicki’s mitten? Let’s do our own mitten experiment and see what we learn.

Recommended Ages:  Preschool/Kindergarten

Domains or Early Learning Standards: Mathematics Knowledge & Skills; Logic & Reasoning

Materials Needed:

  • A variety of old mittens (they might get a bit stretched during this activity)

  • A mitten made from paper

  • A collection of small animal figures

  • Chart paper

Preparation: Set up a station with a selection of mittens and a collection of small animal figures. Prepare a chart so that you can record each child’s name, their prediction, and the number of animals that were able to fit inside their mitten.

Activity:  Talk to the children about what happened in the story, The Mitten. Pose this question. When you first saw Nicki’s mitten, did you think so many animals would be able to fit inside? Let’s find out how many items fit inside our mittens.

  • What are mittens made from?
  • Do they stretch?
  • We also have some paper mittens.  Do they stretch?
  • Do you think the real animals from the story could fit inside these mittens?
